History Of That Place

Henry’s Island was named after a European surveyor named Henry Pridham who discovered it in the late 19th century. During the British colonial period, the island was used as a plantation for growing coconut, betel nut, and other crops. After India gained independence, the island was converted into a tourist destination and is now managed by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation.

Henry’s Island is located around 130 km from Kolkata and can be reached by road. One can take a private car or a taxi from Kolkata and reach the island in around 3-4 hours. The nearest railway station is at Namkhana, which is around 30 km away from Henry’s Island. From there, one can take a taxi or a bus to reach the island.
